Intel's new Atom CPU is their smallest: though it is fast (47 million transistors), it consumes ~ 1/10 the power of older CPUs. Intel's Core 2 Duo CPUs, and AMD's Turion 64 X2 models, include 2 CPU "cores" on a single chip of silicon, allowing them to perform symmetric multiprocessing at a lower price than PCs with separate mulitple processors. This results in a much faster machine, particulary for people who like multitasking--running more than one program at a time. Intel's dual core CPUs also include features carried over from their now passé Pentium M CPU, like a 2MB L2 cache, advanced branch predicting, and "speedstep technology", to give high performance at relatively low clock speeds, thus extending battery life.
